The papers include material concerning the building of the Great Northern Railway (1889-1903); the planning, organizing and equipping for construction of the Panama Canal (Chief Engineer of the Canal, 1905-1907); of the American Railway Advisory Commission in Russia, and the Inter-Allied Technical Board in charge of Russian railways; planning system of railways for Spain; promoting and building the Oregon Trunk Railway extension into California; and his discovery of the Marias Pass in the Rocky Mountains, and his opinion of the possibilities of the monorail.
